Description: What began as meetings to discuss the New York Feminist Art Institute (NYFAI) 1979 to 1990; has expanded to include an ongoing roundtable discussion with smaller meetings and book discussions about the different ideas regarding Feminism between the generations. The first roundtable was Oct. 19th, 2007 at A.I.R. Gallery. The next one scheduled for Jan. 18th, 2008 also at A.I.R. Gallery. We began with bi-monthly meetings of NYFAI participants, discussing ways to bring attention to the major contribution made by this feminist art school. For 10 years, NYFAI held classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, performance art, filmmaking, poetry, critical writing, and other subjects. Faculty included: Nancy Azara, Judy Chicago, Elaine DeKooning, Louise Fishman, Jewel Gomez, Barbara Hammer, Harmony Hammond, Lucy Lippard, Arlene Raven, Ntzoke Shange, Miriam Schapiro, May Stevens and others. Guests of honor over the years included: Louise Bourgeois, Alice Neel, Louise Nevelson, Faith Ringgold. The NYFAI Oral Histories continue with the generous donation from Helen Stockton, NYFAI's oldest student, died aged 90+, her daughters, Joan and Robyn Stockton, contributed money to record NYFAI's oral history. We are currently in the process of interviewing and recording this history. The tapes and interviews will be housed at Rutgers University's archives. Any person who attended or worked with NYFAI and/or is interested in knowing about our meetings, oral history project and roundtables, please contact Nancy Azara. NEXT MEETING: Please contact Nancy Azara for schedule of future meetings. Documentation for this event is housed in The Feminist Art Project archives at Rutgers University.
