Description

In May 2020, The Aldrich will present the first major US solo museum exhibition of New York-based artist Genesis Belanger (b. 1978), whose practice spans sculptures and tableaux, primarily composed out of porcelain, stoneware, and upholstery. Outwardly expressive, objects we commonly wear, use, or consume pose demonstrative human attributes in Belanger’s world: lipsticks with wagging tongues, lamps donning ladies’ pearls, and tins flaunting rows of doey-eyed sardines. These dreamlike jumbles invoke surrealists like René Magritte and Kay Sage and Pop artists like Marisol and Claes Oldenburg, but Belanger’s animated compositions embody conditions that channel our self-possessed present. This exhibition will debut a new body of work specially conceived for The Aldrich. The artist’s first museum publication, with an essay by Amy Smith-Stewart, the exhibition’s curator, will accompany the show.
