Women and Art
Course written by Professor Joan Marter
This course focuses on women artists of the modern and contemporary period, and begins with the study of paintings by women from the 16th to the 19th centuries. We will consider how gender issues are encoded in images of women. Readings explore the socio-political context for the creation of women’s art. The course will include two quizzes, a midterm, and a final exam. Students will also write a short paper as a review of a current exhibition. Visits to galleries in Chelsea and museums will feature works by contemporary women artists. The gallery visits include transportation and are considering “extra credit”. There are no prerequisites in art history necessary for this course.
